Difference between Scripture and Bible

Difference between Scripture and Bible

The difference between Scripture and Bible can be viewed in terms of: etymology, general meaning and religious meaning. While some etymologists trace the origin of the word ‘scripture’ from Latin, meaning sacred book or writing; the origin of this term ‘Bible’ had been linked with Latin, Greek and Middle English. Bible, in its original meaning is a small book; if the scripture implied Holy writing, the Bible reflects on the size of the publication rather than its content. There is therefore a clear variation here; a publication called Bible because it is diminutive in volume or the font size used as at then.

A scripture writing is intended to teach moral value and to reveal the existence of a deity to man. The general meaning of these two words “Scripture and Bible” tends to remove any differences between the words.

For instance, Bible contains scriptures bound into a book, and someone can scarcely go to a bookshop for scriptures but for a copy of a Bible. Scriptures may refer to different books, chapters or verses of a Holy Book. For this reason, religions such as Islam, Hindu and so on, can as well use the word “scriptures” in similar sense with Christians.

Bible is most freely used by Christians to describe their own book of Holy writings. In the Christian religion, Bible is never regarded as a small or little book. It is a sacred book and “scriptures” is used freely to refer to the contents of the Holy Book. Searching the scriptures, to a Christian, is studying the Holy Bible; to someone who is not a Christian, studying the scriptures might not imply reading the Holy Bible. The Bible is believed to be the most widely read book, it is made up of several books including a whole scripture, but scriptures are not always Bible and cannot spread far and wide.

Furthermore, Bible is a name given to a Holy Book while sripture makes reference to holy or sacred words. There are, indeed, more deals with the creative power of God and His purpose for man, sovereignty and redemptive grace. Scriptures from other religions have failed to compete favorably in making their gods acceptable to the world. Authors of the Holy Bible were holy men having the spirit of the Almighty God and the authors of other scriptures were men without the spirit of the Almighty God.

The Bible is a book of mystery showing God’s interest in a nation through the call of a man who is known as Abraham, but scriptures might impose religious laws that are ordained by the supreme God. When we open the Bible, we read through scriptures and can read other scriptures without involving the Bible; the Bible scriptures are inspired by the Holy Spirit, hence, the Holy Bible. Scriptures cannot lay claim to holiness which is one of the attributes of a supreme Lord. Bible is a universal book, no quite so with scripture; it is a book with the spoken word of God.

Difference between Scripture and Bible

Scriptures are not necessarily God’s word, they have never succeeded in gathering many nations into a single religion unlike the Bible. The Bible has the power to guarantee man eternal life, no scripture has an equal assurance. Bible is a book of restoration of a broken relationship, a scripture is not; Jesus Christ is the center of salvation for the entire world. This can only be found in the Bible, not in mere scriptures; Bible preachers are called and ordained, scripture preachers are not. Scriptures can mislead, for example, the amputation of human parts according to religious laws, Bible cannot.

Bible, which is the word of God, has contributed immensely to global peace, playing significant roles in the abolition of social vices, scriptures has not. There are Bible schools, colleges and churches, none of which pertains to scriptures. God’s word has evolved several professions like pastors, bishops, teachers and so on, scriptures have birthed very little or none.

The whole world depends much on the Bible for justice and equity, not on scriptures and in matters of conflict resolutions, scriptures remain silent; but the Bible is always vocal in a bid to uphold orderliness. Bible is a multiple related religious texts, scripture is known to be under a religious text.
